Uses of gray iron

In mechanical manufacturing

Machine tool bed: Gray iron has good shock absorption and wear resistance, and can effectively absorb the vibration generated by the machine tool during operation. For example, the bed of ordinary lathes, milling machines and other machine tools is usually made of gray iron. Because in the metal cutting process, the cutting force between the tool and the workpiece will cause the vibration of the machine tool, and the gray iron bed can reduce the impact of this vibration on the processing accuracy.

Machine base and bracket: Gray iron is a common material for the base and bracket of some large mechanical equipment, such as generators, compressors and other equipment. It can provide stable support for the equipment, and because of its relatively low cost, it can reduce manufacturing costs while meeting the basic strength requirements.

Automobile manufacturing field

Engine block: The casting properties of gray iron make it suitable for manufacturing engine blocks with complex shapes. Although its strength and toughness are not as good as ductile iron, for some vehicles that do not have extremely high requirements for engine performance, the gray iron cylinder block can meet the requirements. In addition, the gray iron cylinder block also has certain advantages in heat dissipation, which can effectively dissipate the heat generated by engine combustion.

Uses of ductile iron

Mechanical manufacturing

Crankshafts and connecting rods: In power equipment such as engines, the high strength and good toughness of ductile iron make it an ideal material for manufacturing crankshafts and connecting rods. For example, the crankshaft of a car engine is subject to complex alternating loads during operation. The ductile iron crankshaft can withstand such high stress and is not prone to fatigue fracture. The same is true for connecting rods, which need to transmit power in high-speed reciprocating motion. The mechanical properties of ductile iron can ensure the reliability of the connecting rod.

Gears and worm gears: Gears and worm gears made of ductile iron have high strength and wear resistance. In mechanical transmission systems, these components can effectively transmit power and maintain a long service life. Compared with gray iron, ductile iron gears can withstand larger loads and are more stable at high speeds.

Municipal Engineering

Water supply and gas pipelines: Ductile iron pipes are commonly used pipes in modern municipal engineering. They have high strength and toughness, can withstand high internal pressure, and are suitable for urban water supply and gas transportation. For example, in urban water supply networks, ductile iron pipes can effectively prevent pipe ruptures and leaks, ensuring the safety and stability of water supply.

Construction Field

Building Structural Parts: In some large buildings, ductile iron can be used to manufacture building structural parts, such as bridge supports, building connectors, etc. These parts need to withstand large loads, and the excellent mechanical properties of ductile iron casting can meet the safety requirements of building structures.
